Summer Hockey Rules
SENIOR MIXED GRADE (SOCIAL/SERIOUS)
In this grade the emphasis is on the enjoyment and the maintaining of fitness and field skills. Whilst competitiveness is not discouraged, it should be remembered that novice players need some encouragement and leeway and that the “win at all costs” philosophy is not always appropriate. This is a non contact sport
The normal rules of field hockey shall apply except to the extent that they are negated or modified by these rules. The team organiser on behalf of ALL team members agrees to abide by the playing conditions and rules of this competition.
- Team composition:
(a) each team shall consist of 6 (six) players. teams may start the game with a min of 4 players (2 males / 2 females). each team may use any number of interchange players.
(b) mixed teams: mixed teams shall have a minimum of two women (or men) on the field at all times. any mixed team that does not have two women (or men) on the field shall forfeit the game.
(c) it is recommended that all players shall wear mouthguards and shinpads.
(d) all teams are to provide their own ball, first aid and ice.
(e) subbing during games must be done from your own defensive backline and be made after a goal is scored or when the ball has crossed your own defensive backline.
(f) no goalkeepers.
(g) games will start and end on timekeepers whistle. no injury time allowed.
(h) all teams must supply umpires after their game. the teams playing at the second timeslot must supply umpires for the games prior to and following their own game.
(i) no school player prior to year 9 shall be allowed to compete in the pbha senior mixed summer grade.
- Rules of play:
(a) Safety is paramount. The umpires are responsible for aiming to maintain a high level of safety throughout the game. Umpires Decision is Final.
(b) The game shall be played on a half field from normal sideline to sideline.
(c) The ball may be played off the tubing dividing the fields. If the ball goes over the tubing then the match is restarted with a free hit to the team that did not play the ball over the tubing.
(d) Self Pass, Once past the halfway line, standard attacking 23m rules will apply.
- the ball must not be played into the circle until it has travelled at least 5 metres
or the ball has been touched by any player other than the player taking the hit.
- all players must be 5metres from the player taking the free hit.
(e) Barging and aggressive behaviour will not be permitted nor will play deemed to be intentionally dangerous or likely to cause injury.
(f) Lifted ball - the ball may not be raised above knee height.
(g) Pushing the ball - a push is a push and the stick should be touching the ball when the push occurs. No hits, slap hits or reverse shots are allowed.
(h) Players with blood on their body will be asked to leave the field of play until the effected area is tended to and bleeding has been stopped or covered. Clothing with blood on it will need to be changed.
(i) Swearing on the field will not be tolerated.
(j) Intimidation of players or spectators in any way will be penalised. Repeat offenders will be suspended from play and/or action may be taken by PBHA if the incident warrants it. This includes intimidation by spectators towards other spectators or players.
- Penalty Corners – there will be no penalty corners. If an infringement happens within the circle a long corner free hit will be awarded.
- Long Corners – To be taken in line from where the ball passed over the back line and 5 meters from the top of the circle edge
- Sixteen hits – these must be taken in line with where the ball crossed the back line and the top of the circle edge
- Competition points
(a) Points are awarded to the winning team, or to both teams in the event of a draw. The team that wins the competition is the team with the most number of points at the conclusion of the competition.
(i) Winning team: 3 points
(ii) In the event of a draw: 1 point (to each team)
